More and more photos are popping up on Instagram that proudly hastag #tbt, or on Facebook with the title ‘Those were the days….’. At this moment in time there seems to be a massive 90’s revival: tattoo chokers and gwen stafani-esque teddy buns all over the shop.
Now for someone who grew up in the 90s; I had 2 colours of the tattoo choker, a glittery cat suit, glittery hair mascara, body glitter, glittery bull dog clips (actually- anything that sparkles) I can appreciate why anyone would want to revisit such a cool yet edgy era. A lot of the style around at that time was a pic’n’mix from different eras as well. For example 90s grunge was reminiscent of the Gothic and the Victorian era.
There are a few articles circulating around that basically criticizes anyone trying to revisit or revamp a particular style or subculture from the past; calling it pathetic and sad.
To be honest, this is a rather weak and naive perception of the world. The earth, while small in comparison to the rest of the Universe, has been around for billions of years. We have surpassed the Industrial Revolution; with mass production and the invention of the department store. This revolution made way for how Western society now views retail and shopping. Now I’m sure everyone knows this. This piece is not an attempt to inform; it is an opinion piece. My point is, the world has been around for so long that it’s safe to say that pretty much everything has been done! Worn, sang, made, shown, invented, etc. We are in such a Post, Post-modern situation that everything has a risk of being recycled.

Me as a youngster, too sassy for my own liking
Based on my somewhat limited and short experiences of travelling around with my family, being put through British education and coming out of it on the other side with 12 GCSE’s, 3 A Levels and 1 Degree, the best way to be ‘unique’ (if such a word even exists) is to be as eclectic as possible. By this I mean, quite simply, like whatever the hell you want to- regardless if it’s ‘trendy’ or ‘popular’. Listen to the music you want to, wear the clothes you choose to, be the person you are and do not apologise for that (#sorrynotsorry). I’ve been doing it for years, I had the dorkiest pencil case (it looked more like a tuppaware to be quite honest) and most people made fun of it, then after a while they started to copy. The things I wear has always been the same. In the winter, my favourite coat is a black and white dalmatian faux fur jacket, complete with hood and ears. People stare at me and think ‘how weird’, but, whatever, I love it, so that’s all that matters to me.

Me on my birthday, had to take a selfie with crazy birthday glasses of course
I think to look back to the past, especially to times where life was easier, the economy was better and fashion/music/culture was at its peak, is certainly not a bad thing. It is human nature to want to escape from the world we currently live in, and what better way than to dress up a bit crazy and listen to old school 90’s tunes?
Peace out peeps, and stay stylish ❤
